To better compare, we looked for you the advantages and disadvantages of Below and the notes given by specialized sites.

New localisation languages
A new and original adventure
More mini-games and new scenes
Localisation errors still remain

Worthwhile side game bundled in

Relive the phase of the Morning Glory orphanage to make it very enjoyable.
The combat system makes a drastic leap compared to the very weak original.
The Dark Ties mode is a bonus that is worth much more than that.
New mini-games and side missions everywhere that lead to a much more complete game.
Some changes in the story seem to be more for fan service than actually useful.

Additional story elements provide even deeper lore
Loads of fun and addictive side activities
Dark Ties explores the story of the main antagonist
The kids at Morning Glory Orphanage now have the spotlight they deserve
Some characters were recast and redesigned
Teruyuki Kagawa?s real-life controversy

Lots of meaningful content: side activities, mini-games, and new modes well integrated.
The pack as a whole: Kiwami 3 improves upon the original and Dark Ties brings a new story that really adds something.
This can overwhelm new players: the amount of systems and activities is not for everyone.

Great to have two experiences to play through
Kamurocho & Ryukyu have a great atmosphere, which feels lived in
Ryukyu-style combat is a great addition
Some cutscenes are unskippable
Dark Ties is a bit shallower and shorter compared to Kiwami 3

Now, you can put your own playlist on during Kiryu's walks.
Dark Ties is a very fun addition to Yoshitaka Mine's story.
Changes in the story that will not be to the liking of the classic fan.

Return to glorious, crunchy combat
+
No more spongy enemies
+
Doing it for the kids
Maps too cramped for some new additions
-
Remake could take bigger swings
-
Dark Ties is insubstantial, out-of-step, and dull
[4/5] reviewed at 10/02/2026 - Test Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties: I came for the nostalgia and stayed for the unexpectedly excellent punching [read the full review on Absolute Geeks]

Excellent new mini-games and substories
Still one of the most fun, intricate stories in the series
Dark Ties adds plenty of new content.

Kiryu at his very best
Bad Boy Dragon is a top tier activity
Addictive orphanage management
Immaculate Okinawa vibes
Fast, punchy combat
Dark Ties adds welcome depth
Controversial story changes
Redone soundtrack is a downgrade
Weirdly blown out visuals

Three levels of difficulty
The control doesn't seem overloaded.
Full main game and bonus campaign of over eight hours
Wide selection of side quests, mini-games, and collection tasks...
Powerful action fights with intense furious action finishers.
Typical mix of drama and madness
The management of the orphanage fits perfectly into the main campaign.
Storm of colorful effects
The fights start smoothly and you can fight inside the stores.
Mainly beautiful graphics
Mainly good German texts
Japanese and English voice
...which sometimes seems too good to be true
Tutorials for new content make even the first act even more laborious than in the original.
Terribly ugly water effects
As the appearance of some characters has been adapted to their actors, recognition can sometimes be lacking.
No German voice

It is always a very entertaining and enjoyable adventure.
Dark Ties is a highly appreciated addition...
Graphically, the jump is much smaller than in the other Kiwami games.

Dark Ties as a standalone additional game
Large volume and typical diversity of series.
Atmospheric and dense staging
No gender scale chart
Design of mission structurally perceptibly ancient
Design of mission structurally perceptibly old

Dark Ties mode is a great addition.
It is good to learn more about Mine's history.
Humanize Kiryu even more and show one of the sweetest moments of his story.
Modes like the Mine Coliseum and the orphanage with Kiryu are excellent additions.
Dark Ties could rely on its more developed subplots.
Some narrative and visual changes go against the established canon in the franchise.

Significantly improved gameplay
Completely redesigned graphics
The missions of Dark Ties tend to repeat themselves.
Some plot changes might upset you.

Dark Ties is a small but sumptuous aside
The contrast between Yakuza Kiwami 3 and Dark Ties is alluring
Damage Control in Dark Ties is a cool way to present challenges to players
Shoot Boxing is a vicious alternative to the regular Dragon Dojima style
Survival Hell is decent but feels superfluous
Cutscenes can go on and on for way too long

Interesting scenario to follow
Two complementary fighting styles
Many and varied activities
Okinawan atmosphere in the background
Technically not flawless

Many brand new side activities
Dark Ties is a nice addition.
Dark Ties is a bit flat from a gameplay perspective.

Dark Ties enriching
Switch Port 2 copy: 60 fps everywhere, divine portable mode
Iconic OST and authentic dubbing
Partial recast dividing for purists
Additional content can sometimes be very uneven.

The range of mini games are a joy to indulge in
The Dark Ties side story is a great addition
Although Blockuza has been improved its still there
Horrific decision not to recast Teruyuki Kagawa

Dark Ties is a quick, brisk, and refreshing new kind of Yakuza story
Weapon abilities are fun but not very fitting the tone
Some strange late-game story changes that divert from the original

Even more intense gameplay
The Ryukyu Style is a real asset.
The Morning Glory is expanding its content.
A nice extension in content
A dated engine
Some redundant mini-games

Mine's story is kept up to a rapid pace and doesn't overstay its welcome
Bad Boy Dragon storyline features multiple 100-man melees and showcases Kiryu's potential against overwhelming odds
Still some of the best facial capture and performances in the business
Kiryu gives everyone the business with his two signature fighting styles
Full outfit and makeup customization
Straddles the fine line between drama and over-the-top comedy
Recasting major characters ruins the original vision
Barely longer than the last Gaiden title
Entire weapon and armor systems removed and replaced with collectible phone charms

The new fighting style puts Kiryu in a different situation when facing his enemies.
Dozens of hours to enjoy exclusive secondary content and classics.
Dark Ties is a fantastic expansion: Mine is the opposite face to Kiryu's adventure.
The members of the Dragon gang got a little confused. It's not the big role-playing game we were expecting.

Interesting Roguelike mode
Usually rich content
Dark Ties fits in well.
Many contents deleted or replaced
Inaccurate combat system
Camera issues can sometimes be strong during fights.

The biker gang and the orphanage, two new successful big mini-games.
High-quality music
Being able to customize Kazuma and his phone is fun.
Great fights, thanks to the two different and complementary styles.
Very engaging despite the flaws
A story offering many memorable moments
Many cuts
A rewriting of the ending that turns grotesque
Quite a few small bugs
The impression of a hastily made game
Dark Ties is way too short.

Game Gear!
Dark Ties doesn't add much besides content volume
Kagawa "controversy" is impossible to ignore

Combat is much improved over the original
Dark Ties is a good, streamlined expansion
If you love endless side quests, you'll be in heaven
Visuals have thankfully been fixed for launch
The recasting controversy may be a distracting dealbreaker

Combat systems are fun
Lots of minigames
Upgrade changes make sense
The ending change is baffling and, again, the expansion fails to justify it

A story full of surprises...
Well-written characters...
Clashes always so enjoyable...
A lot of content
The pleasant surprise Dark Ties
But failed recastings
But a impoverished combat system
Forced ancillary activities, it's a no.
Technically not up to par

A wide range of fun entertainment
The typical balance between the drama and humor of the Yakuza
The presence of actor Teruyuki Kagawa
The story regressed due, among other things, to retcons.
We removed a lot of content from the original game.
Graphically and artistically very inconsistent.
The original scenes have been carefully reconstructed.
new actors are doing their job well
Many new contents
Dark links as a strong complement
The usual madness of the Yakuza always entertains.
Teruyuki Kagawa is a disastrous choice.
Unintelligible deleted mini-games
Okinawa can sometimes seem very strange.
Blocking opponents in battles is still far too common.
Ryukyu Style combat is a lot of fun
Tons of QoL benefits and modern features
Morning Glory shines as a lite life sim
The Haisai Girls are badarse
Mine's character is fumbled across both experiences
Dark Ties is just okay as a bonus extra
Lotta sexual predators getting passes in here
Solid Gameplay Updates
Great New Minigames
Short Expansion
Poor Facial Animations
Retains The Problems Of The Original
