Super rare games known for producing limited numbers of physical games for certain Indie titles continue their own publishing label with lone ruin an arcade style twin stick roguelike game quite similar to something like Hades if I were to offer a comparison to other games in the genre it's just about to release on the Nintendo switch but has it left me Spellbound or a ruin of a man well thank you to the publishing team for the review code and
now let's find out

Explorer seeks the fabled power within the ruined City Legends speak of the inhabitants at once lived there in harmony wielding great magic but not much else is known about the place other than the city is
now laying in Ruins and is home to horrendous creatures the Explorer must use a mixture of spells and Agility to progress further within the lone ruins

Gameplay wise this is a spell-based twin stick shooter with roguelites and arcade mechanics your character will arrive at the entrance of the ruins and be greeted by a tall hooded entity who will offer one of eight spells these are quite varied and play very differently from each other albeit all have a cooldown penalty when depleted and there are more spells to find Within the Ruins and your character can carry a maximum of free offensive and offensive spells the player will enter a floor and will have to evade and defeat the waves of enemies that appear on screen once they have been defeated you'll be able to choose one of two paths each with a symbol of the next room's reward this gives the player a bit more strategy while still being fair and challenging mainly because preview in the next rube's rewards is only half the battle as you still have to enter and of course survive to obtain it the gameplay here is very fast paced and satisfying mainly due to the simple controls and the fluidity at which the character moves around the level the evasive dash for example is not limited to elevations within the environment meaning that one button press can cause the player to dash up platforms where the monsters cannot reach you immediately like all other actions within the game the dash also has a cooldown enemies come in all shapes and sizes with some being particularly dangerous in big numbers and it can be easy to get overwhelmed defeating them will

reward the player with gold that can be used to buy new spells when you reach a shop there are also items known as blessings that have passive effects and you'll find these scattered in each run although you do have a finite amount of slots available to carry these blessings luckily the game allows for either spells or blessings to be sold if you don't need them or need to make room for newly found ones within the pause menu all you need to do is Select and then hold the x button to sell as with other roguelites when choosing a newfound spell or blessing the character can pick from three different Boons such as decreased cooldown or higher damage output there are two game modes with different levels of difficulty to choose from that being from easiest to hardest the main game plays much like a story mode of sorts where the player must complete 21 levels to win then their survival mode that will test your concentration and skills with each wave of enemy getting bigger and harder to defeat if you die your score can be submitted to the online leaderboards I really did enjoy the gameplay here as it is quite a unique twin stick roguelike with arcade pickup and play mechanics the more a spell gets upgraded during a run the more powerful it becomes at the beginning of your next run I chose the Lightning Spell for example and was happy to see that I could use it in my next playthrough with an added upgrade this really encourages the player to try out different combinations of spells and try to upgrade their power as much as possible what really separates this from similar games in the genre is the simple gameplay mechanics which can be played by anyone there is no padding here whatsoever and all of the attention has been concentrated on being a fun pick up and play experience which is refreshing to see as with the market being oversaturated with roguelites of all kinds it's nice to have a game that respects the player's time gameplay scores 18 out of 20. likewise controls are tight and simple to grasp which really does help the gameplay and they also score 18 out of 20.

When it comes to the visuals the developer has used a specific palette to bring this Samba world to life this consists of indigo's Pinks and purples contrasted

against the cyan and light blue spell and lighting effects there are few cut scenes but the ones that are here are truly beautiful pixel art still images that pan in different directions in order to give them a dash of life my main critique would relate to the lack of variety when it comes to Scenery even if they'd have kept the same color palette just to change up the locales or background imagery would have been a plus in my opinion I did love some of the extra visual aspects though and effects such as the hints of fog all the waterfalls in the background really do add a lot to the game and there are some lovely little touches such as the Spells themselves which have a certain fluidity when cast making them look somewhat organic in nature these effects really do help the pixelated visuals pop from the screen enemy designs are imaginative enough with each looking more gruesome than the last there were no frame rate issues here and the game uses a fair font size with regards to the audio the soundtrack is probably one of the best I've ever heard in a roguelike with some bombastic drum and bass and electric songs elevating the experience of the game

This genre goes well with any fast-paced soundtrack and this is no different there is nothing more scintillating than dodging waves of Abominations whilst casting spells on them with those Tunes banging as you play visuals have a sharp and crisp look but could have done with a tad more variety and they score 17 out of 20. audio is very good and Suits the gameplay perfectly and it gets the full 20 out of 20.

Lone ruling costs 12 pounds 99 and Regional equivalents are on your screen now there are currently no plans for a physical Edition but with super rare games publishing this could be something that occurs in the future grapple dog was their other published game I believe and that did get a limited physical release in the end so it is a possibility the quality here is pretty impressive considering that it was created by an indie developer there's a lot to enjoy and whilst it is a simple game it caters to all kinds of players from the score junkies to those looking for a more cathartic game to blow off some steam some people may begin

to find the gameplay Loop a little repetitive and I feel that most people would know by
now if that statement applies to them by what's been said in the review so far but overall value scores 17 out of 20.

To conclude as a personal fan of these kinds of games I can truly say that my long month with the review code has been an absolute blast although the gameplay can become repetitive there are enough loadouts and game modes to keep you coming back for more if you enjoy such games and having an online scoreboard will definitely have the most competitive of Gamers spending a large amount of hours attempting to perfect each run if you have ever wanted to experience this genre at its best but felt a little overwhelmed finding a good place to start this is a fantastic jumping in point and a great game in its own right
